That Computer Guy is proud to offer a new service, TCG Send It!, a secure file sharing platform, for FREE!

For a limited time, customers can sign up for our new Send It! service for free.  TCG Send It! is a service to easily send files up to 2 GB in size, encrypted and even password protected if you wish.

How it works

All communications with the service are encrypted using strong encryption protocols, including Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS).

In addition to mandatory use of secure communications channels while delivering files to and from the service, all files are encrypted using AES 256-bit encryption before being stored at the service. This provides security for data at rest as well as for data in motion.

A significant flaw named the “Heartbleed Bug” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartbleed_bug) has been discovered and poses a large security threat to the internet as a whole. The Heartbleed bug is present in the software library OpenSSL which is used by many websites to privately send data to and from an internet server.

Fortunately, our servers were not affected by the Heartbleed bug when it was publicly disclosed.

The Heartbleed bug has had a profound impact on the transmission of secure data throughout the Internet. It is for that reason that we are encouraging you, our customer, to reset your member area password at your earliest convenience as a matter of common password maintenance. Please remember to always make your passwords unique, random, and periodically rotate them.

We encourage you to change your password, both on our website as well as any others that you use, as many services have been affected.

CNet compiled a list of popular websites as to whether they are vulnerable to the bug or not, and whether they have been patched or not.  They have also indicated whether a password change was recommended on those sites.  That good information is here:  http://www.cnet.com/news/which-sites-have-patched-the-heartbleed-bug/

This story is on going.  It is widespread.  It is reaching to firewalls, routers, possibly mobile phones, etc.  We have not heard the last of this vulnerability.  There are reports that it MAY not be as serious as first thought, but better safe than sorry.

You can also check websites you may visit regularly to see if they are vulnerable or patched by entering their domain name at the following site:  http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/

Windows XP Support has Ended

While we at TCG are in the computer industry and should be keeping up with significant changes in technology and software used on a daily basis, it is a bit surprising at how much the End of Life of Windows XP has caught users and businesses so off guard.

We've been answering dozens of questions daily about Windows XP and that it's "going away".  We've had everything from the attitude that "I'm not going to bother with dealing with it", to "The news said I could upgrade my 10 year old computer to Windows 8", to "Is my computer just going to stop working on April 8th?"  We've had businesses that are completely unaware of the need to upgrade for compliance reasons for their industry, and some that think we can just put a disk in the computer and upgrade to windows 7 or 8 and everything will be fine in 20 minutes.

Let's go through some of the details and answer some of the questions we've been answering on the phone over the past few weeks.

Thanks so much for the help with our computer. You certainly make the service seem painless. I've passed your name on to others - hope you don't mind.
